BOARD OF TRUSTEES DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORS

Call for Nominations

TO:              All Faculty

FROM:        Peter J. Nicholls, Provost

DATE:         August 4, 2009

RE:              Nominations for BOT Distinguished Professors

Annually, outstanding faculty are recognized as Board of Trustees Distinguished Professors.  This is the call for nominations for individuals who you believe qualify for this stellar distinction.  Please note that the candidates must be strong in all three areas of research, teaching and outreach/service. This award includes a $2500 one-year stipend to be used by the recipient to further professional activities.

All individuals for this distinction must be nominated by one (or more) faculty via a single nomination letter.  The nominator does not have to be a department head or dean. Self-nominations will not be accepted.  Nominations will be considered active for a period of three consecutive years.  During the second and third year, the nominator will be asked if he/she wishes to submit updates for the files.  Each nomination must include:

1.  A cover letter with a brief overview of the candidate's worthiness for the award.
2.  A three page Summary of Qualifications.  This summary must dedicate one page to discussion of the nominee's research/creative endeavors, one page to teaching and one page to outreach/service.  Any nominations not in compliance with this format will be returned to the nominator(s) for revision.
3.  An updated CV that includes all publications and creative endeavors.  Citations for journal articles should include all authors, full article titles, full journal titles, and page numbers.  For books, proceedings or other publications, the information should be comparably complete.  For creative works such as exhibitions, curated exhibitions, performances, and musical compositions, date and venue should be included.
4.  Names and complete addresses, including email, and telephone numbers of six referees.  Normally, no more than two of them should be from close colleagues, collaborators or former students.  At least one of the individuals should be qualified to focus on formal teaching and may be an internal UConn reference.  The remaining referees should be individuals external to the University, who have a national/international reputation and are familiar with the nominee's work.  No more than six letters will be incorporated into the review file.  Please note that the Committee reserves the right to request additional letters from UConn faculty, department heads, or deans to assist with their deliberations.  Request for letters will be sent by the Committee.

To assist in preparing your nomination, the selection committee's criteria are described below.  In the past the Committee has found that there is often insufficient information, particularly regarding teaching and outreach/service, to fully assist in its deliberations.  I greatly appreciate your cooperation in adhering to the criteria specified.  This will assist the Committee in their review of the nominations.

The due date for nominations is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2009.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Vice Provost Nancy Bull, Chair of the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor Selection Committee.

Please send your complete set of nomination materials as a PDF file to Catherine Dunnack (catherine.dunnack@uconn.edu), who will provide support to the Committee.  The names of the referees should be sent to her as a separate Word file, and not included as a part of the nomination dossier.

Thank you.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR
SELECTION CRITERIA

The BOT Distinguished Professor is the highest honor that the University bestows on faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and outreach/service.  To be eligible candidates must have attained the rank of Full Professor.

This award is for faculty who have spent a significant portion of their career at UConn.  Special consideration will be given to the achievements of the faculty member while at UConn.  Nominees should also be actively engaged scholars.  Candidates must be strong in all three areas of research, teaching, and outreach/service.  Evidence for these should include the following:

Teaching:

  • Undergraduate and graduate courses taught during the past seven years (including course title and credit hours for each).
  • Formal teacher evaluations by students if available, or other evaluations or evidence of excellence in teaching.  Evaluations may be presented in a summarized form and supporting documentation attached.
  • Data on placement and activities of former graduate students.
  • Evidence of presentations that constitute teaching beyond UConn.
  • Collaborative publications with students.
  • Teaching innovations.

Scholarly Productivity and Creative Works:

  • As with promotion, tenure and reappointment, the scholarly productivity and creative works component should receive special emphasis.  The candidate must possess an international or national reputation in his/her field.

Outreach/Service:

  • All types of service and outreach will be considered in evaluating the “/outreach/service” component of the award.
  • Service to the University, the state and at the national and international level should be separately described.  This includes service to the candidate's academic profession, professional service and outreach to the community and to governmental entities.  The contributions and impact of the service and outreach activities should be explained.

Note: After nominations are received, the Committee chair will solicit letters from external referees and the complete dossiers will be provided to the Committee for evaluation.
